Here are some random "tips & tricks". Also see Brush

Contents:
1. Grabbing a texture from an existing surface
2. Clearing out all references to a particular texture
If you have a map opened and you want to select one of the textures you see in the 3D view, you can select it without having to search through dozens of texture packages.
First, select the surface by left-clicking on it.
Then, hold the Alt key down on the keyboard and right-click on the same surface. The texture is now selected.
You can now apply that texture to another surface by right-clicking on it and selecting "Apply Texture XXX".
If you've got a custom texture that you want to completely get rid of in your map (or for some reason you just want to clear out a particular texture), there's a very quick way of doing it.
In the Texture browser, find the texture and select it. Now just hit the "Q" key on your keyboard. You're done!
